The Windmill Bar, nestled in the heart of St. John, has a storied history that mirrors the city’s fascinating journey through time.

The Windmill Bar: A Glimpse into Saint John’s Rich History

Nestled within the enchanting Neptune’s Lookout estate, The Windmill Bar stands as a living testament to Saint John’s captivating journey through time. This establishment is part of a recreational estate that encompasses not only the bar itself but also the iconic Susannaberg windmill, a 9-hole disc golf course, and a campsite, all set against the backdrop of the former sugar plantation, Estate Susannaberg.

A Piece of History: The Susannaberg Windmill

The story behind The Windmill Bar and its surroundings begins in the 1780s when the Susannaberg windmill was erected. Estate Susannaberg is the site of a former sugar plantation from the 1700s.  The windmill tower of Estate Susannaberg was erected between 1780 and 1800 and is the second oldest windmill on the island of St. John.  While the wooden framing and grinding machinery are long gone, the stone tower remains strong and sound.  [Source: Library of Congress]

The estate has been owned by the same family, the Neptune Richards family, since the 1950s. This majestic windmill, with its towering presence, served as a crucial part of the island’s history during the colonial era. Today, it stands as a proud sentinel of the past, a symbol of resilience, and a reminder of the island’s rich heritage. Today, Neptune Richards’ descendants continue to be the proud custodians of this unique property, preserving its legacy and ensuring its place in the island’s history.
